Fated, talented, innovative, radical, champion. There´s no lack of qualities when it comes to Gabriel Medina´s career, the biggest idol of brazilian surf nowadays, and first pro-surfer from Brazil to become World Champion. Medina´s story matches with the sea since his childhood. Born in 22th December 1993, he began to surf effectively by the age of 9, influenced by his father, Charles Saldanha, at Maresias´Beach, in São Sebastião.

The first featured title came by the age of 11, when he attended under 12 category on Rip Curl Grom Search in Búzios, Rio de Janeiro, arousing the interest from the label which once would become his master sponsor. After that, he dawned in several relevant contests, such as Brazilian National Amateur and Paulista (the main championship in the state of São Paulo).

His first conquer outside Brazil was a second spot in Under-14 Volcom, in California, then the vice championship in Under-16 World Championship Amateur, in Ecuador. In July 2009, he signed a contract with Rip Curl, in Brazil, when he gained projection.

In 2011 came the sequence that guaranteed him on World´s Elite, the QS 6 stars Prime in Imbituba, in the state of Santa Catarina, then both QS 6 stars in France and Spain. Besides that, there was still a victory in World Pro Junior (WSL), also in french waves.

He joined CT in the middle of 2011, when he was only 17 years old, and until today he is considered the youngest surfer. When he made his debut there, he already won two stages, both in France and USA. At the same time, he became World Pro-Junior Champion, also by WSL, in 2013, celebrating the title in Brazil, at Praia da Joaquina, in Florianópolis, Santa Catarina.

The year after came the much-dreamed-of world championship title, the first from a brazilian pro-surfer. The date was December 19th 2014, and by the most convincent way, along with three victories in stages and beating icons such as Kelly Slater and Mick Fanning. In 2015, he fought for the world championship title again until the final stage at Hawaii, ending at the third place and winning the title of Triple Crown of Surfing, becoming the first brazilian to conquer this special contest.

INSTITUTE – Combined with the career as a competitor, Gabriel Medina is writing another chapter in his own story. In 2017, will be launched Instituto Gabriel Medina (Gabriel Medina Institute), which its structure is going to be held in Maresias, where he learned to surfing and lived his whole life. Idealized by Medina himself along with his Family, the institute has the goal to apply the same training methodology to the new generation of talents devoted by Medina to achieve the number 1º place of the World.

Getting Real with Gabriel Medina

Gustavo Kuerten

"I´ve met a boy, in that time he was only 15 years old, who had something else, a sparkle in the eyes that gave him possibility to see beyond and so high what so few people were capable to do. An intriguing boy, fearless, who already knew what he wanted and how he would pursue his goals. Always wanted more and more than many people, with all that strengh and passion. He was  there, in front of me, as a soul of a champion.
"

Kelly Slater

"Congratulations to Gabriel Medina. He is more determinated and hungry for the victory than any other surfer. He is complete: matches airs, pipes and torns."

Felipe Nasr

"He is a super athlete, and also a good person. He left so much inspiration to the young surfers. He´s a super talent, the brazilian people recognize it and he has already become an idol of the sport. What I know about Gabriel, his family, from the people who are on his side, is that he reunites all of them to this team, that puts everyone ahead. I met Gabriel 4, 5 years ago and he still keeps the same guy. This is really cool and the fact that he spreads those values to the world.
"

Neymar Jr.

"He is really focused and knows what he wants for his life and career. The pressure will always exist for an athlete that is competing. The anxiety will always catch you up, but our dream speaks louder. Brazil always had such great athletes in all sports and all over the world. For me, conquering something big is the best thing that can happen to a World-Class athlete. For us, brazilians, having someone like Medina in surf is simply wonderful."
