Medina intensifies trainings looking forward the Open Tour in Australia
Determined, more focused and compromised. This is Gabriel Medina preparing himself for the new season, especially for the Open Tour in Australia. Following the two-time world championship, the 23-year old surfer made his pre-season “at home”, using the structure of the recently launched Gabriel Medina Institute, at Maresias´ Beach, in São Sebastião, under Allan Menache´s orientation, who is responsible for his prep since the year of 2011.
The physical part was intense and now Gabriel follows for the technical training, along with his father and coach, Charles Saldanha. Both Allan and Charles had cellebrated the bigger time they´ve got for the preparation. “It was an opportunity that the calendar has provided to us. And that´s what the athlete is all about. He or she has to take advantage of the opportunity to do his/her best. We´ve got more time. Gabriel always start to gear in a couple of stages, now he´s starting completely prepared”, reveals Charles.
“The first goal is to reach out stronger in Australia, so he can get good results earlier. This is really important and it does not depend from the coach, but from the athlete himself, and Gabriel is more focused, more determined, with more will. The scenario looks like 2014, when he came along with everything”, said the coach.
Personal trainer Allan Menache also compliments the positive attitude of Gabriel. “This year, the biggest difference I´ve noticed is related to the change on the psychological aspect and the commitment with the preparation. He is getting even more engaged, definetelly realizing how important is to practise correctly. This has been very good for all”, he explained.
As Charles said, Menache also stands out for the biggest time to prep, allowing the better division of the training´s phases. “This allows more optimization, more time to adapt”, he says, “First we worked out the aspects related to the neuromuscular conditions, strengh increase, adequacy of muscle mass and fat mass”, he added.
“The initial work, beyond the strengh part, has focused a lot in the mobile and stability works. So we had more possibilities to evolve in each single phase due to the bigger time we´ve got. This allowed to experiment some fresh things”, he commented.
After that, the training sessions were carried out with more intensity. “We´ve introduced jumps, pitches, pulls and pushes of fast action. We are bringing a lot of specificities, not only on movements that are executed and are very similar to the surfing, but also the similarity of the strengh production and the metabolic aspects. It has been very productive”, Allan complements.
The biggest interested reinforces the determination and animation with the preparation of the Australian Leg. “I´m fine. It has been tough. The beginning is always difficult, but then I get used to it and it makes me want to practise more. It stimulates me. The goal is to get 100% in Australia. Now I´ll be travelling, to get some good rights and test my boards to get even more prepared”, completes Gabriel Medina.
