Health promotion: a priority in Gabriel Medina Institute
The health promotion of the athletes will be one of the priorities in Gabriel Medina Institute (GMI), which will be launched by february of this year, at Maresias´ Beach, in São Sebastião. Besides providing to young talents the same training structure as held by the first brazilian world surf champion, the enterprise will offer a special medical rear that follows the Top 3 World Surf athlete, under Doctor Marcelo Baboghluian´s responsability.
With expertising in Sports Medicine for the last 26 years, the doctor follows several Top Surfers, among them Gabriel himself, and develops a important concept of health promotion in Marazul Institute, GMI´s official partnership. The invitation came from Medina´s family, aiming to increase the health quality of the athletes that will be attended. “Heath promotion means making people feeling better tomorrow than today. That´s what I do. When it´s applied to the athlete, we search for performance”, explains doctor Baboghluian, also known as “Doc”.
According to him, four features must be followed by the competitor who searches to improve his/her own performance: first comes the general health, second, nutrition, physical conditioning as third, and last but not least, questions of the psyche. “There´s no doubt that tactics and technique are inherents of the athletes´ development, but they aren´t the only ones responsible to take someone to the top. It takes general health, nutrition, physical conditioning and also psyche. The group of these habilities will take the individual to the high performance”, the doctor explains.
“Each one will show a different need, some of them much more evident than the other ones. And we´ll try to identify the main work to do. There´s no unique protocol for the daily monitoring, because it´s very dynamic”, says Doc, who is also preparing a custom evaluation to each athlete that is going to attend the first class of the project. Besides the conversation, there will be applied clinical, laboratory and image exams. The parents from the athletes will also join them to be guided as well.
“We´ll explain the doctor´s goal to young athletes and their parents. The evaluation will not reprove. We´ll give them support, to provide security that the athlete is going to develop himself. The protocol of the International Sports Medicine Federation will be used for the custom evaluation of those children, in order to guarantee security to the development of the work”, Marcelo Baboghluian reinforces.
President of GMI, Simone Medina, explains that the medical rear is also a important social tool, because it´s going to work along with the families. “We are going to guide, bring the parents closer and promote the well-being into their home. We couldn´t choose someone better than ‘Doc’. We´ve spoken about our experience among with Gabriel”, Simone said.
It should be noted that the Marazul Institute is a Sports Medicine Center dedicated to the health promotion, diseases prevention, increasing of the quality of life and sports performance. It attends hundreds of athletes, specially in surf. “For most people it´s a little bit hard to understand the conception of health promotion, because usually we only see the Medicine with the purpouse of healing. When someone is sick, then he/she seek for medical care. The prevent medicine is mostly known by women, when they seek for a gynecologist. So day by day we develop the health promotion”, she reaffirms.
Created by the first brazilian world surf champion´s own resources, the GMI will provide to young talents from 10 to 16 years old the same structure of training used by Medina himself. The first goal is to increase the performance, but in general, the Institute holds a important social benefit. “We know that not all the boys and girls are going to become world surf champions, or even pro-surfers. Otherwise, our desire is to transform them into citizens, good people”, Gabriel Medina announced.
The head office located at Maresias´ Beach (Avenida Francisco Loup, 893) is almost done and it includes gym, classrooms, doctor´s office, pool, elastic bed (for air trainings) and even a palanque to hold championships and battery simulation. “This is a dream coming true and I can´t wait to see those boys and girls training there”, he added.
